The Marans breed originated in France and was introduced to England around 1929 by Lord Greenway. The Marans Club was founded in 1950 at The Grosvenor Hotel, London
The body is of medium length with good width and depth for meat production. Marans have high tails, complementing a neat head with a single comb and prominent eye, having an orangey-red iris, red earlobes and white legs.
They mature quickly for a heavy breed, reaching 6-7lbs 2.7kg-3.2kg in six months.
A Marans fowl should be capable of producing a colour four egg at some time during its laying cylce
